The Chinese appreciate this fish for its high fat content and it is believed that it is a food that can reduce cholesterol. It can also be cooked with tangy tomatoes. The fish is often red-cooked until tender, with plenty of thinly sliced brown onions and shredded ginger. In the northern regions, they like to douse the fried hairtail with an appetite-whetting brown vinegar and sugar gravy, which also helps repel any lingering pungency. Sometimes, Welsh onions or scallions are added and the fish and herbs become a topping for noodles. The fried fish can be processed one more step, by braising in a savoury brown sauce that varies in different regions. The most common way is to shallow-fry it to a crisp, so that the thin edges can be crunched up while the flesh inside remains sweet and tender. Hairtail, beltfish, ribbon fish, knife fish-its English names are many, but the Chinese know it generally as daiyu, one of the few instances when the country is linguistically united. It helps that this species of fish has always been in abundant supply in the seas around China, enough to feed the mighty masses. Otherwise, the hairtail has few other fine bones, unlike the slim forked bones of most Chinese freshwater fish.įor this reason, the hairtail is appreciated, and also for the sweetness of its flesh. The transparent side fins are attached to long, thin, comb-like bones that pierce the sides and these have to be carefully removed before eating. It lacks a traditional fish tail and the side fins taper to a thin thread at the tip. It is a member of the cutlassfish family, with double rows of fins running down both sides. These days, hairtails are more often than not sold flash-frozen, already processed and cut into much shorter sections. Males have thick jaws and a bulging forehead. The slender fish are as gray as a rain cloud, with large heads and dark spots over their backs. They swim by making deep S-shapes with their bodies, like a snake moving across the ground. However, there are some concrete plans in place. Speaking to Matsuno and Goodman, it sounded like much of Unsung Story is still in germination I didn't see the game in action, and the pair still has to talk and agree about how multiplayer should exactly be implemented, for example (for the record, there'll definitely be online PVP). That sounds a little complicated to build a narrative around, but Matsuno said that despite the game's name, narrative isn't as big a part of the game. In contrast to having a story based around a main character as Tactics did, Unsung Story lets players select whichever country and its leader they want to at the start of the game, and how they work through the various countries. ![]() As the name suggests, Unsung Story will focus on the more ordinary people of war - the footsoldiers rather than the Eisenhowers, as Goodman put it.Īs for the tactics-based battle system, Matsuno said Unsong Story will play somewhat similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, based around a small number of combatants rather than large armies. Matsuno is taking inspiration from the Saxon Britain of the 5th to 8th centuries, an era following the Romans' retreat. That'll include iOS and Android for certain, Playdek CEO Joel Goodman told Joystiq today, but he was keen to not limit the game to those platforms.Īt the Tokyo Game Show, Matsuno explained to us that Unsung Story will be based around nine small countries, each one fighting one another. After leaving Level-5 last year, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story director Yasumi Matsuno is now working with tabletop publisher Playdek on a new strategy game called Unsung Story, coming to digital platforms. Specifically, the authors looked at the effluent from the Josephine Brine Treatment Facility in western Pennsylvania and its impact on downstream water quality and sediment. The plant, which only treats oil and gas wastewater, dumps its effluent into Blacklick Creek, a kayaking and whitewater destination. The Effluent From a Plant Designed to Treat Fracking Effluent So how well do these facilities really do? What is their downstream impact? Warner and his colleagues set out to find out. Although they’ve been in use for quite some time to treat water from conventional oil and gas operations, many facilities of this type have been found lacking and some have even incurred fines for failure to meet Clean Water Act or other regulatory standards. (See here, here, here, here and here.)īut there are so-called brine treatment plants that are at least in principle equipped to handle that level of contamination. But you can’t use a standard municipal water treatment plant to treat flowback and produced water as those facilities are just not designed to handle the level of contamination, especially radioactivity, found in these waters. But this method has its own problems - the injection process has the inconvenient habit of causing an earthquake every now and again.Īnother alternative is waste treatment: removing the contaminants and then dumping the“clean” water into a nearby sewer or river. One disposal route is injection into deep wells, and a good deal of flowback and produced water from the Marcellus Shale is transported to Ohio for just such a deep burial. Even so, that leaves a massive amount of toxic wastewater to be disposed of. And methods to reuse more are being developed. In the Marcellus Shale gas country of Pennsylvania, for example, a large percentage of the water, in the vicinity of 70 percent, is currently reused. Ideally, the water would be reused or recycled, eliminating the need for immediate disposal. And so the gas companies have a problem: what to do with the stuff. Fracking wastewater can contain massive amounts of brine (salts), toxic metals, and radioactivity. Once the chemistry of the water coming out of the well resembles the rock formation rather than the fracking fluid, it is known as produced water and can continue to flow as long as a well is in operation. (For more, see “Natural Gas, Hydrofracking and Safety: The Three Faces of Fracking Water.”)Īs a general rule, you would not want to take a shower much less drink flowback or formation water, nor would you want to just pour the stuff into a river or stream (although that has been known to happen, as described here and here). Hydraulic fracturing, as the term implies, involves water - both at the front end with fracking fluid, the water-based chemical cocktail that is injected into the shale, and at the back end where there is flowback water and produced water.įlowback water (which literally “flows back” during the fracking process) is a mixture of fracking fluid and formation water (i.e., water rich in brine from the targeted shale gas-rich rock). Now a paper published this week in the journal Environmental Science and Technology by Nathaniel Warner formerly of Duke University and colleagues focuses on another of those environmental costs: disposal of wastewater. Measurements suggest that, at least in some cases, drilling operations that include fracking have caused contamination of surface and drinking water, and fracking operations, like all natural gas drilling, cause the leakage of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Since the fracking rush is way past the start phase, these are probably not non-starters for fracking, but they do represent huge challenges for industry and government who need to make sure they are appropriately addressed. Among the more vexing is the potential for significant environmental costs. ![]() Complications With Frackingīut alas, as with most too-good-to-be-true things, fracking’s got some downsides. What a bonanza: a new and sizable source of natural gas. And, at first blush, a fuel that’s good for the environment: natural gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels and has already begun displacing coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel, in U.S. Combined with horizontal drilling, fracking has allowed us to access huge amounts of heretofore unrecoverable natural gas. fracking) is the technique of injecting water, sand and chemicals at high pressures into shale and other tight rock formations to release the fuel trapped inside. You know that fracking thing? For the uninitiated, hydraulic fracturing (a.k.a. Another crack in the “fracking is safe” story for the industry to address. ![]() ![]() LED screens are more visible outside when compared to LCD or projection. “The digital signage system objective is one that the user’s content resolution will match the perception of resolution of the viewer’s eye, which is based upon the fovea of the eye and the distance to the screen, to the created resolution of the LED display.”īefore you decide to use an LED screen, consider lighting. “When factoring in digital signage sizes, the implied viewing distance and the ability of the eye to discern the pixels and notice pixelation, a viewing distance of 1.25 to 2 meters can be expected,” writes Gary Feather, CTO of NanoLumens. The more nits you have on your screen, the brighter the screen. In a word, a nit is a unit of visible-light intensity. ![]() In terms of brightness, an LED screen ranges from 300 nits to 700 nits for low to medium light conditions, and 2500 nits for higher light conditions or outdoor applications. This type of display uses light emitting diodes to visualize images. LED screens can range in size anywhere from 10 inches up to 95 inches. Overview of LEDįirst, let’s talk about LED screens. To help you better understand the difference, here’s a closer look at LED screens versus LCD screens. It’s a sticky subject, especially now that we are seeing more and more LED screens being used indoors. Where they were primarily used outdoors at large sporting events or other venues, LED screens are now popping up indoors – mostly thanks to a lowered price point and the flexibility of LED screen shapes.Īs the popularity of LED screens grows, there’s still confusion regarding which kind of commercial-grade screen should be used: LED or LCD? It can be seen that a polarizer absorbs half of the light of the conventional but not of the new backlight.Digital displays are always changing, so it’s crucial to understand the existing difference between LED and LCD screens. A demonstrator backlight is shown in Figure 4 next to a conventional backlight. The birefringence of the foils is maintained surprisingly well in the hot-embossing process so that this seems a promising route for mass fabrication. Microscope pictures in Figure 3 illustrate good shape reproduction. Microstructuring is done by diamond-tool machining or hot embossing. Perpendicular to the stretch direction typical values are 1.54 for PET and 1.56 for PEN. Through stretching, 10,11 the index of refraction in the stretch direction typically increases to 1.70 and 1.85 for PET and PEN, respectively. The first 8,9 uses uniaxially oriented poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) and PET foils. Two types of polarized-light backlights have been developed. Stretched birefringent poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) foils microstructured using (left) diamond-tool machining and (right) hot embossing. 6,7 The additional challenge associated with the latter approach, apart from manufacturing issues, relates to how one can eliminate large absorption losses in the metal film.įigure 3. It has also been proposed to integrate a wire-grid reflective polarizer into the light guide. 5 These approaches suffer from several drawbacks, however, including the nonuniform extraction of light and the need to inject collimated light, with the associated efficiency losses. Use has also been made of oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) foils 4and liquid-crystalline polymers. In this context, both polarization-dependent light scattering 1,2 and the polarization dependence of the so-called Brewster angle 3 have been demonstrated. We aim to apply the angular and polarization selection more efficiently. The latter must be depolarized and re-emitted by the backlight system. Light with the desired polarization state is transmitted, but orthogonally polarized light is reflected toward the backlight. A second enhancement that is sometimes used recycles the polarization. This is done using micro-optical foils that select and transmit light emitted in certain angular ranges and recycle the rest (see Figure 1). The luminance is therefore usually enhanced in the viewing direction, at the expense of light emitted at large angles. Of every lumen of light generated in the backlight, only 2–8% is used owing to light losses in polarizers, color filters, and other optical layers. The optical efficiency of color LCDs is notoriously low. |
